Pharmacy subscriptions bring coaching and continuity to medication
Why are we willing to pay for everything, except the one thing that matters most?
Everywhere I look, people are investing in accountability: gym memberships, fitness apps, meal prep subscriptions, wellness platforms, all designed to keep us consistent and optimized. But when it comes to the one thing that could make the biggest difference in long term health, medication management, support is still fragmented, transactional, and impersonal.
This raises a big question: If we’ll pay for fitness coaching, why not medication coaching?
The missing link in health: Pharmacist led medication coaching
Pharmacists are among the most trusted and accessible health professionals. They have the clinical know how to optimize therapy, prevent problems, and support chronic disease management. But most patients get a hurried five minute chat at the counter or an annual medication review, and that’s it.
Imagine if, instead, patients could subscribe to a pharmacist-led medication optimization program. For a recurring monthly fee, they’d get:
- Regular medication check ins
- Proactive side effect monitoring
- Integration of meds with diet and lifestyle habits
- Coaching and guidance, accessible by chat or app
It’s the personal training model for medication, tailored, ongoing, and designed to adapt as life changes. Just as fitness coaches use data from wearables to tweak workouts, pharmacists can use medication data, adherence metrics, and symptom tracking to fine tune therapy plans.
Shifting from reactive to preventive care
Traditional healthcare is reactive: call when something’s wrong, show up when you need a refill, hope nothing gets missed. A subscription approach flips this on its head:
- Proactive coaching keeps people well, identifies concerns early, and supports ongoing optimization.
- For employers and payers, this means measurable improvements: fewer complications, lower hospitalization rates, and better adherence.
- For patients? Clarity, confidence, and real continuity of care.
Redefining the pharmacist’s role, and value
For pharmacists, this isn’t just a new business model, it’s a redefinition of professional identity. Rather than being paid per prescription, pharmacists would be compensated for real value: improved health outcomes and patient satisfaction. The focus moves from dispensing to relationship, based care, with the pharmacist as a long term partner in each patient’s wellness journey.
The subscription economy is already here, healthcare is next
We now subscribe for TV, fitness, food, and even pet supplies. Why not subscribe to the expert who manages the foundation of our health, our medications?
Pharmacists are uniquely positioned to lead this shift. By building medication coaching memberships, we can design better adherence, better outcomes, and, ultimately, better health.
Reflect & Act
- If you’re a patient: Would you value ongoing access to a medication expert who knows your health story?
- If you’re a pharmacy leader: What would it take to package your expertise into a membership that people can’t imagine living without?
- If you’re a payer or employer: How could a proactive, subscription based model improve outcomes, and control costs, across your population?
Our world is already paying for value on a recurring basis. Isn’t it time pharmacy joined the club?
What would you want in a pharmacy membership? How could this model improve your health?
